Chapter 24

“Let me see,” Javier said, walking around his desk to get a better look at Tavi. He lightly touched Tavi’s hair and then held Tavi’s head straight, appraising his look with the eye of an expert. He turned to Yuri with an approving nod. “Good job, Yuri,” Javier said. “Let me know where you found the hair stylist and we can send some of our other boys there as well.”

“Okay,” replied Yuri, after a moment’s hesitation. Tavi wondered if Yuri paused because he wanted to try to keep Liz separate from his work life.

Javier turned back to Tavi. “Take your pants down. Let me see which underwear Yuri picked out for you.”

Tavi grimaced. He undid the snap on his pants and pulled them down to his knees. He had tried arguing with Yuri when he had first seen what Yuri had given him, but it was to no avail. Yuri had lost his patience and slapped Tavi across the back of the head, effectively ending the conversation.

“Superman underwear,” Javier noted, “and tight like a little boy’s underwear.” He turned to Yuri with a smile. “I’m impressed. Tell me what you were thinking.”

Yuri flushed a little at the compliment as he explained, “I think that most of our customers probably want younger boys than what we offer, but they take what they can get.”

“Yeah,” Javier said seriously. “They’re a bunch of sickos.”

“And so,” Yuri continued, “Tavi will be playing into their fantasy a little bit when they see the tight Superman underwear, which means they could be extra happy, which is better for everyone.” He stopped for a second to chew the inside of his cheek. He wasn’t sure if Javier wanted to hear a new idea from him, but he had seemed pleased so far, so he barged ahead. “I was thinking – and it’s just an idea – that right before the bidding for the last round tonight, we should give the final bidders a peek at Tavi’s underwear. Maybe it’ll excite them and they’ll bid more.”

Javier studied Yuri for a second before breaking into a huge grin. “Yuri,” he said proudly, clapping him on the shoulder, “the highest bid we’ve had so far for one boy has been eight hundred talents. I think we’ll try your idea, and if the highest bid for Tavi is higher than eight hundred, I’ll give you ten percent of the difference. So, if Tavi’s price is nine hundred, then you just made ten talents. How’s that sound?” Javier asked, holding out his hand.

Yuri grinned and shook Javier’s hand with enthusiasm. “Thank you, sir! Thank you, really!”

“No. Thank you, Yuri,” Javier said honestly. “You have good ideas and you do good work. I like you.” He looked at Tavi and said, “I like you too, Tavi. And I have a feeling that the customers are going to love you. Let’s go have an auction, and just make sure that you smile a lot.”

He turned and walked through the door near his desk and down the stairs.
